Harvest at the Thessaloniki Urban Vineyard

The annual harvest took place on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, at the Urban Vineyard of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, on Agiou Dimitriou Street. Municipal employees and local residents volunteering for the occasion took part in harvesting the vineyard’s red grape varieties, Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko, following the earlier harvest of the white varieties, Malagousia and Robola. This year’s production is expected to yield approximately 800 bottles of wine.

As part of this year’s harvest, Mayor of Thessaloniki Stelios Angeloudis honoured Vangelis Gerovassiliou for his longstanding support and contribution to the Urban Vineyard of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in the presence of Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Urban Greenery and Fauna Vasilis Diamantakis.

Vangelis Gerovassiliou placed particular emphasis on the social dimension of the initiative, with this year’s production once again being donated to charitable causes.

Ktima Gerovassiliou’s relationship with the Urban Vineyard dates back to its very beginning. Since the vineyard was first established, the Estate has undertaken the processing of the grapes, as well as the vinification and bottling of the wine produced, as a voluntary contribution, supporting the continuity and development of the project. The initiative was launched approximately 13 years ago, during the mayoral term of Yiannis Boutaris, in collaboration with the School of Agriculture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

During the harvest, Mayor of Thessaloniki Stelios Angeloudis acknowledged the people who consistently support the Urban Vineyard, highlighting the contribution of the employees of the Municipality’s relevant department and residents.

“Once again, we are here for the familiar occasion that brings us together every year at the start of the harvest,” Mr Angeloudis said, stressing that the Urban Vineyard is a characteristic example of how meaningful pockets of greenery and spaces for cultivating nature’s produce can be created within the urban fabric.
